Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

What is an intensive outpatient program (IOP)?

IOP is a level of care that typically comes after detox or residential treatment, and might be deemed necessary for specific clients by their therapist and recovery coach. Serenity’s IOP is an eight-week program that meets virtually and in-person at our Upper Kirby location four days a week.

Clients will receive weekly individual therapy sessions, and family members also have the option of participating in the family programming.

IOP focuses on chemical dependency education, introduction to the 12-Step Program, coping skills, and relapse prevention. With the client’s therapist and recovery coach, each client gets an individualized treatment plan to help them achieve sustainable, long-term recovery. Our goal is to bridge the gap between treatment and home life by helping clients successfully integrate back into their daily lives.

What can I expect in IOP?

As a client in our intensive outpatient program, you will address underlying issues, build a structure that encourages self-discipline in your daily life, craft a support network of individuals to aid in lasting recovery, and learn to implement major lifestyle and behavioral changes. This is typically done in a group therapy setting, which is a cornerstone of IOP.

Why group therapy?

While individual counseling and therapy is also a crucial part of recovery, group therapy helps our clients reacclimate into the everyday world by practicing specific behavioral techniques amongst a group of between six to eight peers. Clients may address topics that include:

  • Alternatives to substance use, violence and self-harm
  • Relapse prevention
  • Conflict resolution
  • Shame and guilt
  • Scheduling and self-care
  • Co-occurring disorders
  • Stress management
  • Assertiveness training
  • Forgiveness and family
  • Mindfulness practices
  • Expressing oneself through creative outlets (such as art)
  • How to change negative thinking, behaviors, and emotions
  • New ways of interacting and communicating with others
